Air con refill: the short answer

An air con refill (also called a regas or recharge) for a home or office single split system costs from £240, including leak detection, a deep vacuum and a weighed refrigerant charge. Multi-split and VRF systems get a free written aircon quote after inspection. Air conditioning should never need regular refills — if it is low on gas, there is a leak, and we repair it before refilling. Call 07414 254125 for a quote.

Get a free aircon quote

The quickest way to get an aircon quote is to call 07414 254125. Have three things ready: the make and model (on a sticker on the side of the indoor or outdoor unit), what the system is doing — blowing warm, icing up, showing an error code — and your postcode. For a standard single split refill we can usually give you the price on the call. For multi-split, ducted, cassette and VRF systems an engineer inspects first and you get a fixed written quote before any refrigerant goes in, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

If the system is old, uses banned R-22 refrigerant or has a leak in a coil that would cost more to repair than it is worth, the quote will say so and include a replacement option. You can compare it with our published air conditioning prices and the installation cost guide.

Air conditioning does not use up its gas

A common belief is that air conditioning needs topping up every year, like a car. A properly installed system is a sealed circuit and keeps the same refrigerant for its whole life. If yours is low, gas has escaped — usually at a flare joint, a Schrader valve core, a pipe rubbing on a bracket or a corroded outdoor coil. Simply topping it up means paying again in a few months, and for larger systems the F-Gas rules require the leak to be repaired before any recharge. That is why every refill we carry out starts with leak detection.

Running a system that is short of gas is also expensive. An undercharged unit can lose 15–25% of its cooling while drawing the same electricity, and the compressor runs hot. Left long enough, a refill that would have cost a few hundred pounds can turn into a compressor failure and a full replacement.

Signs your air con needs a refill

  • Air is cool rather than cold, or takes much longer to reach the set temperature
  • Ice on the indoor coil or on the thin copper pipe at the outdoor unit
  • Low-pressure or high discharge temperature error codes
  • Hissing or bubbling from the indoor unit, or oily marks on pipe joints
  • Weak heating and frequent defrosting on heat pump systems in winter

Before booking, check the filters in the indoor unit — a clogged filter causes many of the same symptoms and is free to fix. If the filters are clean and the problem continues, switch the system off and arrange an inspection.

How an air con regas is carried out

1. Inspection and readings

The engineer records pressures, temperatures and the data-plate charge so the fault is confirmed as low refrigerant, not a dirty filter, failed fan or sensor fault.

2. Leak detection

Electronic leak detection, with UV dye or a nitrogen pressure test where needed, to find where the gas escaped — usually a flare joint, Schrader valve core or corroded coil.

3. Repair

Accessible flare, valve and joint leaks are normally repaired on the same visit. A failed coil or concealed pipe run is quoted separately, honestly compared against replacement.

4. Vacuum and refill

The system is evacuated to around 500 microns and held to prove it is tight, then refilled with the exact refrigerant weight on the manufacturer's data plate.

5. Commissioning

Running readings are taken and recorded, the F-Gas log is updated and you get a record of what was found, repaired and charged.

Refrigerants we refill

We refill systems running R-32 and R-410A, the two refrigerants used in most wall-mounted, multi-split and commercial systems, and R-407C on older equipment. Mixing refrigerants is not allowed, so the system is always refilled with the type shown on its data plate. R-22 cannot legally be used for servicing; for those systems we quote a replacement. All recovered refrigerant is disposed of properly with a waste transfer note.

Air con refill and aircon quote FAQs

How much does an air con refill cost?

An air con refill (regas) for a home or office single split system starts from £240, including leak detection, a deep vacuum and a weighed refrigerant charge. Multi-split and VRF systems get a free written quote after inspection because charge weights vary.

How do I get an aircon quote?

Call 07414 254125 with the make and model of your system, the symptoms and your postcode. Single split refills are priced on the phone; larger systems get a free written quote after an engineer has inspected them.

Is an air con refill the same as a regas?

Yes. Air con refill, regas, recharge and gas top-up all describe putting refrigerant back into the system. Done properly, the old charge is recovered, the system is vacuumed and an exact weight of new refrigerant is charged.

Why does my air conditioning need refilling?

Air conditioning does not use up its gas. If it is low, refrigerant has leaked out, so the leak needs to be found and repaired before a refill or the gas will escape again.

Do you refill car air conditioning?

No. We work on wall-mounted, multi-split, ducted, cassette and VRF systems in homes and businesses. For car air con, use a vehicle garage or mobile car air con specialist.

Can R-22 systems be refilled?

No. R-22 has been banned for servicing since 2015. We can quote a replacement system or, where the equipment allows, a legal retrofit refrigerant.
