Every air conditioning installation follows the same five stages, whether it is one bedroom split in a terraced house or a twelve-cassette VRF system in an office. Knowing what happens on each day removes the guesswork — and lets you compare quotes on what is actually being done, not just the headline price.
An engineer measures each room, records glazing area, orientation, insulation, occupancy and any heat-producing equipment, then calculates the cooling and heating load in kW. Sizing by room area alone is the single most common cause of an underperforming system, so we calculate rather than estimate. The survey takes 30–45 minutes and costs nothing.
We specify indoor unit type (wall, cassette, ducted or floor console), outdoor condenser position, pipe route, condensate drainage and electrical supply. You receive a fixed written quote listing equipment models, seasonal efficiency ratings, the full labour scope and all-inclusive pricing. No provisional sums.
Floors and furniture are protected before work starts. We core-drill the wall (typically 65 mm), mount the indoor bracket, run insulated copper refrigerant pipework, condensate drain and interconnecting cable, and site the outdoor condenser on anti-vibration mounts or brackets clear of boundaries and windows.
The pipework is nitrogen pressure-tested, then evacuated to below 500 microns to remove moisture and air. Refrigerant is charged by weight to the manufacturer's specification. This stage is what separates a system that lasts fifteen years from one that leaks within two, and legally requires an F-Gas certified engineer.
We run the system in both cooling and heating, verify superheat and sub-cooling, check drainage and noise levels, and record readings on a commissioning certificate. You get a demonstration of the controls, the F-Gas log, your 5-year warranty and an annual service reminder.
A single wall-mounted split is a one-day air conditioning installation in most homes. A two-room multi-split runs to two days, three or four rooms to three days, and ducted or VRF projects are phased over a week or more. Scaffolding, long pipe runs above 15 m and listed-building constraints add time, and we flag all of that at survey rather than on the day.
Clear access to the indoor wall and the outdoor unit position, a nearby consumer unit with spare capacity for a dedicated circuit, and parking for the van. In flats, we usually need freeholder or managing-agent consent for the external unit — we can supply the technical drawings and noise data that consent applications ask for.
One core-drilled hole per indoor unit, dust-sheeted and vacuumed as we go. Modern inverter units run at 19–24 dB(A) indoors — quieter than a fridge — and around 45–49 dB(A) at the condenser, which is why siting matters for neighbours. We make good around the wall penetration and take all packaging away.
UK air conditioning installation is governed by planning rules, building regulations and refrigerant law at the same time. Here is what actually applies to a domestic or small commercial job — and where the exceptions bite.
In England, one outdoor unit at a house is normally permitted development if it is under 0.6 m³, not on a wall or roof facing a highway, not within one metre of a boundary when at roof level, and it meets the MCS 020 noise standard at the nearest neighbouring window. Flats, maisonettes, listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 zones are excluded — those need a full application, and we tell you before you commit.
Part L sets minimum efficiency for fixed cooling; Part F covers ventilation where a system affects air movement; Part P applies to the new electrical circuit, which must be installed and certified by a competent person. Systems above 12 kW output carry additional Part L commissioning and information requirements. We issue the electrical certificate with the handover pack.
Under retained EU Regulation 517/2014 only certified engineers may install, charge, service or decommission equipment containing fluorinated refrigerant, and systems must be leak-checked on a schedule based on charge size. Buying a split system and having an uncertified fitter connect it is an offence and voids the manufacturer warranty.
Any air conditioning system with an effective rated output above 12 kW must have a TM44 energy inspection at least every five years, lodged on the national register — that applies to landlords, offices, retail units and holiday lets. Rented residential property also needs the installation reflected in the EPC where it changes the heating or cooling assessment.
Condenser noise is the most common source of complaint and the most common planning refusal. We site units away from party walls and bedroom windows, use anti-vibration mounts and acoustic brackets, and can supply manufacturer sound-power data for a consent or MCS 020 assessment where a neighbour or freeholder queries it.
Every installation includes a dedicated electrical supply where required, certified under Part P of the Building Regulations with the notification paperwork issued on completion. We check consumer unit capacity and handle any sub-main work in-house.
